The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) releases information about the number of deaths from asthma in Australia annually. The time taken by the ABS to compile, analyse and release the information is at least 12 months. Latest release was March 2009 for the 2007 year.
Figures for 2008 are due to be available in early 2010. Data is available for the following years:
2007
In 2007, asthma caused the deaths of 385 Australians – 17 fewer than the previous year.
The median age at death was 79.4 years overall; or 71 years for males and 82.1 years for females.
While the statistics indicate that asthma management messages are getting across to younger adults and carers of children with asthma, they also reinforce the need for increased vigilance, particularly amongst older Australians.

2006
The total number of deaths attributed to asthma in Australia in 2006 was 402.
The greatest increase in deaths occurred in the 70 plus age bracket, with 273 deaths recorded, compared with 191 in 2005.
This is an alarming trend that was identified by the National Asthma Council Australia in 2005 and one that it warns will only increase in line with our ageing population unless health professionals, carers and older people themselves take the threat seriously.

Three hundred and eleven Australians died from asthma in 2004 - three less than the number of deaths recorded in 2003.
The new statistics, released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, continue the downward trend of the national asthma death toll, which peaked in 1989 with 964 deaths.
But, according to National Asthma Council Chairman, Assoc Prof John Wilson they should also be a major wake up call for the 2.2 million Australians who have asthma.
