National Asthma Council Research
As the national communicating authority on asthma the National Asthma
Council's role is to gather, refine and disseminate information on asthma
aimed at improving health professionals quality of asthma care and management.
Through our resources such as the Asthma Management Handbook 2006, Spirometry Handbook, Spirometry Users' and Buyers' Guide and Information Papers and Brochures, we provide evidence-based information for health professionals, people with asthma and their carers.
The National Asthma Council has had a strong commitment to research since its inception. We have undertaken major national epidemiological surveys of the asthma management practices of people with asthma, and of general practitioners and pharmacists. Our major social marketing activities have been evaluated and results of this research have been published in peer-reviewed journals as well as presented at major national and international respiratory, general practice and pharmacy meetings.
Asthma Research Awards
The National Asthma Council funds annual awards to encourage research into asthma.
The awards are offered via the National Asthma Council’s member bodies: the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, and Asthma Foundations Australia.
Each organisation gives their award to the best asthma-related presentation at their respective annual/biennial conference.
Past award winners have conducted research in a wide range of asthma-related areas. Winning presentations have covered such diverse topics as the association between asthma and obesity, gene polymorphism in the development of asthma, new blood vessel growth in asthmatic airways and cytokine involvement in airway inflammation.
