Primary health care nurses day

4 Feb 2026

Primary Health Care Nurses Day on 4 February recognises the important role that primary health care nurses play in our health system, improving the health and wellbeing of communities nationwide.

Primary health care nurses provide essential asthma care.

Primary health care nurses have an important role to play in promoting optimal asthma management so that people with asthma can live full productive lives. Primary health care nurses are often the first point of contact for patients and play a crucial role providing practical care in community health, schools, aged care and general practice settings. These settings all present valuable opportunities for conversations with people with asthma and/or their carers to proactively make a difference.

Primary health care incorporates personal care with health promotion, the prevention of illness and community development, includes the interconnecting principles of equity, access, empowerment, community self-determination and inter-sectoral collaboration; and encompasses an understanding of the social, economic, cultural and political determinants of health.

Primary health care nurses enable optimal asthma care by:

  • identifying people with asthma that may need additional care or that may be undiagnosed
  • recognising the risks of SABA over-reliance
  • asking patients with asthma about their current treatment or management plans and checking that they’re up to date
  • ensuring that people with asthma have an asthma action plan
  • recommending that patients see their GP regularly for asthma check-ups and to review their current management plans
  • ensuring patients are not using out of date medications
  • educating patients on how to use their asthma medications correctly.
