The National Asthma Council Australia (NAC) is the trusted authority in asthma. We set the standards of care through our responsive and evidence-based asthma guidelines, practice tools and resources and renowned education program.

Our asthma webinars series continues to receive a high standard of positive feedback and it remains a popular way of delivering training and support to healthcare professionals in urban, rural and remote settings.

Webinars are facilitated by members of the NAC’s team of experienced respiratory experts, including asthma and respiratory educators, respiratory scientists, general practitioners and nurse practitioners.

Webinar format

Webinars are held in conjunction with a host organisation. Five topics are available and are presented by members of the NAC’s team of experts. All material is based on the Australian Asthma Handbook. 

The webinars are recognised by the RACGP, ACRRM and APNA as CPD activities.

Adult asthma management: What's new

This 1.5 hour session aims to update health professionals on the importance of using the Australian Asthma Handbook to manage with asthma in primary care. It provides up to date, evidence-based asthma management information for treating adolescents and adults.

During the last education series (held 2018 to 2023), 99% of survey respondents reported the webinar either ‘partially’ or ‘entirely’ met their learning objectives.


Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify the steps involved in the diagnosis of adult asthma, referring to the Australian Asthma Handbook.
  • Describe ways to improve and maintain optimal asthma control.
  • Summarise the current guidelines for medication management.
  • Summarise the important information to be included in a written asthma action plan.
  • Describe the steps in managing acute asthma in primary care.
Little lungs: A paediatric asthma update

This 1 hour session focuses on managing asthma in the paediatric population. The Australian Asthma Handbook details the latest guidelines for paediatric asthma from 0-12 months, 1-5 years, 6-11 years old. It provides up to date, evidence-based asthma management information for treating these age groups in primary care.

During the last education series (held 2018 to 2023), 99% of survey respondents reported that the webinar entirely met their learning objectives.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify the steps involved in the diagnosis of paediatric asthma - referring to the Australian Asthma Handbook.
  • Describe the management of asthma across the different ages in children.
  • Summarise the important information to be included in a written asthma action plan.
  • Define the steps in managing acute asthma in primary care.
  • Describe the management of exercise induced bronchoconstriction in children.
Take a breath: Asthma and COPD medications and devices

This 1.5 hour session aims to update health professionals on the latest asthma and COPD medications and devices. It includes a demonstration of the correct technique for each device and highlights the benefits of correct device use in maintaining medication management for those with respiratory conditions.

During the last education series (held 2018 to 2023), 98% of survey respondents reported the webinar either ‘partially’ or ‘entirely’ met their learning objectives.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify the different classes of medications used in asthma and COPD management.
  • Describe the importance of correct device technique.
  • Demonstrate the correct technique for the different devices.
Asthma and COPD: They do overlap

This 1 hour session provides an overview of asthma, COPD and identifies asthma-COPD overlap, including current evidence-based management using both the Australian Asthma Handbook and the COPD-X Guidelines. It includes diagnosis, management, medications and the importance of action plans for self-management is discussed.

During the last education series (held 2018 to 2023), 97% of survey respondents reported that the webinar entirely met their learning objectives.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Describe how to access the COPD-X and asthma management guidelines.
  • Identify the differential clinical features between asthma and COPD.
  • Summarise the current guidelines for medication management.
  • Summarise the importance of written action plans.
Asthma in spring: Allergies and thunderstorms

Available from August to October.

This 1 hour session has a focus on spring time asthma and allergic rhinitis and how to manage both conditions, using the latest evidence-based guidelines. Thunderstorm asthma is a spring time phenomenon that all health professionals in primary care need to be prepared for.

During the last education series (held 2018 to 2023), 100% of survey respondents reported the webinar either ‘partially’ or ‘entirely’ met their learning objectives.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Describe the association between allergic rhinitis and asthma.
  • Summarise the treatment guidelines for allergic rhinitis.
  • Describe those at greater risk of thunderstorm asthma and the guidelines for management.
  • Summarise the importance of written asthma action plans and asthma first aid in thunderstorm asthma season.
