World Asthma Day 2025

2 May 2025

World Asthma Day on Tuesday 6 May is an important reminder about the impact of asthma in Australia and around the world. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) promotes this day every year to raise awareness about the important role that government, policy makers, health professionals and industry all have to together make a difference to improve the management of asthma.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases that affects over 260 million people globally. In Australia, 2.8 million, or 1 in 9 Australians, have asthma. The National Asthma Council Australia (NAC) produces a range of evidence-based resources for health professionals and people with asthma to promote the optimal management of asthma. To encourage the dissemination of these resources, they can be accessed on our website and some are also available to order, free of charge.

Asthma action plans

Asthma action plans are an integral part of a patient’s asthma management as they help patients recognise the signs of worsening symptoms and provides guidelines on the actions to take in these situations.

Adults should have their asthma action plan reviewed once a year, and children should have theirs reviewed every six months.

Asthma action plan templates are available to download and print for free.

How-to video library

Correct use of medications and devices are essential for patients to maintain optimal asthma control. The NAC has a library of instructional videos, demonstrating step-by-step how to use a variety of inhalers, nasal sprays and other asthma or COPD medications.

Our how-to video library provides health professionals further tools to ensure their asthma patients can learn and practice correct device technique.

Asthma management resources

The NAC has a range of fact sheets and information papers on specific topics linked to asthma management, providing advice for health professionals and consumers.

These cover a variety of subjects, including key asthma and allergy triggers, seasonal factors that may influence asthma management (such as thunderstorm asthma or influenza) and other information.

Australian Asthma Handbook

The National Asthma Council’s Australian Asthma Handbook sets the standard for asthma care in Australia and forms the foundation of all our health professional and consumer resources.
