How to use Easyhaler Bufomix and Salflumix devices

Easyhaler is a dry powder inhaler that can be prescribed to treat asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also known as COPD.

The Easyhaler comes in a foil bag along with a plastic cover. Don’t open the foil bag until you’re ready to start using the inhaler. This will help to keep the inhaler’s powder dry.

Having correct device technique is important because this allows you to get the most out of your medicines.

Checklist of steps

1. Check the medication expiry date on the side of the device.
2. Check the dose counter on the side to make sure there are sufficient doses left.
3. Remove the mouthpiece cover.
4. Shake the device in an upright position 3 to 5 times.
5. Hold the inhaler upright, press down on the coloured button. There should be a ‘click’ noise. Release the button back to its original position.
6. Face away from the device and breathe fully out.
7. Turn back to the device and place the mouthpiece between your teeth, without biting down, and form a seal with your lips.
8. Take a quick deep breath for 2 to 3 seconds and hold it.
9. Remove inhaler from your mouth.
10. Continue holding your breath for 5 to 10 seconds or as long as comfortable.
11. Breathe out normally.
12. If you’ve been prescribed more than one dose, repeat this process the prescribed number of times.
13. After you’ve taken the dose, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out.
14. If you accidentally click the Easyhaler without inhaling a dispensed dose, tap the mouthpiece against the palm of your hand or the table to empty the powder.
15. To clean the mouthpiece, wipe it with a clean dry tissue, and replace the mouthpiece cover.
16. Put the device back in its protective cover.

Tips

• Do not open the foil bag until you’re ready to start using the inhaler.
• Once opened, the inhaler has an expiry date. There is an area on the side of the inhaler where you can write the date that the device was first opened.
• Always hold the device upright.
• Ensure your fingers are not covering the air vents before you inhale through the device.
• Check your device technique with your doctor at least once a year and discuss any difficulty you might have using your device with your health professional.
• Ask your pharmacist to recheck your technique each time you have a script dispensed.
• Ensure you have an up to date asthma action plan.
